Latin America’s Triple Sudden Stop | by Eric Parrado - Project Syndicate

During a global pandemic, enforcing key health measures is essential to saving lives until a vaccine can be found. That is the only way to restart economies without multiple sudden disruptions and their crippling consequences.

Brazil, 70,000 new infections a day...Corona in Central and South America every day Getting worse

The world's largest number of new infections per day, the world's highest rate of infection to population, from the president to ministers and vice ministers....

Record-breaking conditions have continued for days in Latin America, the continent with the largest number of Corona 19 patients on Earth. According to the international statistics website "World Ometer," Brazil was branded as the largest number of patients a day, surpassing the U.S. (65,000) on the 29th (local time) with more than 70,000 new confirmed cases per day.

Chile, where 350,000 people have been confirmed, has about 18,400 cases of infection per million people, the highest in the world. Chile, which has a population of 19.1 million, has the highest infection rate (1.8 percent) among countries with a population of more than 10 million.

Bolivia, where top government officials, ranging from President Janine Anes to 12 ministers and vice ministers, central bank chiefs and top military commanders, are suffering from Corona19, also illustrates the crisis in South America. Among the top 10 Corona 19 patients worldwide, four Latin American countries are Brazil, Mexico, Peru, and Chile. Due to this reason, "Latin America is leading the spread of Pandemics (global pandemic)."

Although it is overshadowed by the U.S. patient surge in North America, the recent spread in Latin America is showing signs of panic. According to Reuters, as of the 26th, Latin America and Latin America surpassed North America in the accumulated number of Corona 19.

In addition to Brazil, Mexico, Peru, and Chile, the number of patients increased by 5,000 to 8,000 a day in Colombia and Argentina. South America, located in the southern hemisphere, began to see patients belatedly, as it was called the Clean Continent with Africa in the early days of the Corona 19. The recent craze in the South American continent seems to have also affected seasonal factors that have entered the winter season.

However the problem is that the ability of Latin American countries to respond to Corona 19 is lower than the weather. Despite being the world's largest continent of outbreaks, Latin America has a ridiculously small number of diagnostic tests. Chile (48th, about 82,000 cases) is the only major Latin American country that ranks within 50th in the number of inspections per million people. It is possible to assume that the actual number of infections will be far higher than the government's published statistics, meaning that diagnostic tests are only conducted when there are serious symptoms.

CNN reported, "In Latin America, where the economy has already shrunk, the health and economic impact of Corona 19 could deepen inequality and lead to major social chaos."
